Ben McKelvey – EP Review

EP Review - Everything you were meant to be - Ben McKelvey

Earworm definition: informal A catchy song or tune that runs continually through a person’s mind.

Some EPs pop through the door at gigs and bands and you just know that they are going to be earworm material; the latest EP by songster Ben McKelvey is just one of those.

In fact Mr Gigsandbands was affected by the first number on the EP during a ride on his motorcycle only just the other day. Stay Young is a love song that eschews the usual mawkish sugar and goes instead for a rocky shouty upbeat tone that lifts the spirits and captures perfectly the optimism of infatuation.

Ben's lyrics echo the real world lived experience of an early Housemartins and the sound then turns up in a Beautiful South style collaboration with Lucinda Fosker on Gold although there's a tiny bit of Snow Patrol style production in there.
