Black Water County – Riskee and The Ridicule – Sinful Maggie at The Firestation

So after spending six months inside due to an unfortunate incident involving a dolphin, 10 metres of gaffer tape and Joe Pasquale I'm back

And what a gig to start off with

2 of my favourite local bands and a banging new one for me to obsess over like a Japanese Sci-fi fangirl.

First up was punk outfit Sinful Maggie who are as musically intriguing as their name suggests.

Once again I turn up late and spend most of their set getting gear out of bag and fannying about so although I got to hear their set there are few photos.

This time also involved an interesting discussion with security that involved us being told we could only do the first three songs of SM's set. I've never heard of this rule being imposed locally so I pointedly ignored it but the test shots weren't the best anyway.

So look what to say about these guys?

Vibrant, pumping and loud punk that deserves to be heard in a dingy club full of sweaty people they walk a line somewhere between Pogues, Levellers, Clash and Kylie Minogue.

With a superb set Sinful set the tone for what was about to be a memorable St Paddy's day.

After wandering around and seeing many old friends who I promised to talk to later, then didn't we were hit by the storm that is Riskee and The Ridicule.

Yes.

Forged in the true tradition of London and Home County punk they are worth a watch.

Although there's more than a hint of Slaves about these guys there's a certain melodic quality that harks back to Missing Andy and even further to Agent Orange or UK Subs.

Mix in some MC skills and you have a pretty heady mix that was just right for the now packed Firestation.

Typical of their sound would be 'Banger' which combined heavy guitar influences, a massive hook and veers off into a grime chorus. We like a lot.

Finally the legends ( should that be leg ends?) that are Black Water County.

Not having seen them since Beautiful Days back in August ( I say seen but I couldn't get in the tent) it was a joy to be reunited.

Sadly now without Russ of course (who was there showing his support and has an exciting project in the pipeline) the chaps(and chapess) were on fine form

To be fair they were preaching to the choir a bit as the place was full of merch wearing fans so it was clear that their local fan base remains as strong as ever and the policy of spreading their wings further afield seems to have paid dividends.

A well crafted set to be sure. Some favourites like the ever enjoyable Irish Rover but also singalongs Way Down Low at which point the crowd decided to take over vocals for the night. Hearing a big crowd sing back their songs to them is a thing.

Fields of Athenry, which I haven't heard them do before was well appreciated before they slipped in a couple of cheeky new songs which they are looking to record in the summer. Exciting.Watch this space.

Showing their ability to work a room a segue into Dizee Rascal went down very well although there was a leprechaun who had had enough by this point.

Looking forward to hearing them do Skepta in the near future.

A rousing end with faves Drunken Lullabies and  Loch Lomond saw off an evening of much merriment.

A few months ago I was worried about the local music scene but looking at a cold Sunday night gig with three great bands and a full Firestation just goes to show what an old windbag I am.

OK give these guys a like and a follow and tell them how much you enjoy their music. It will mean a lot to them.

All a bit noisy I'm afraid but in amongst the dross there's some fairly strong shots.
